Grafting Tape

A: It seals the bud or graft tightly and keeps it moist and secure while allowing air to permeate the wound. It also permits a young and healthy bud to emerge through the tape. Moreover, it is biodegradable in sunlight and eliminates the need for waxing.

A: Removing Grafting Tape: When your grafts have healed and there is approximately 200 - 500mm of growth on the trees it's time to remove the grafting tape. This will normally be in mid-December to late-January.

A: Although masking tape has the lowest unit cost, its tendency to unravel is a drawback. Polyethylene film is a readily available and effective grafting wrap. Rolls of polyethylene tape can be obtained through the catalog of some hortictilural supply companies.

A: If plastic tape is not removed from graft union than it tends to rupture or cut across the tissues resulting in formation of gall on its site (taped location).

A: Starting from the bottom, firmly wrap the bud in place with grafting tape (strips of freezer bag or heavy cling film will work too). Make sure you overlap the tape as you wrap it up, over the bud itself, and right up over the top cut. Unless you have self-adhesive grafting tape, tie it off with one or two back hitches.

A: WATER-PROOFING: The film has a wax content to keep it waterproof, so the bud or graft will not dehydrate. Air can pass through the permeable tape allowing the bud to breathe.

A: Six to eight weeks after the grafts begin to grow, cut the tape or film on two sides of the stock away from the grafts. This will allow the tape to eventually peel off, preventing the possibility of girdling.

A: As the graft union heals and the plant matures, the tape will naturally break down, leaving no residue behind. Durability: Despite its biodegradable nature, this tape is durable and can withstand exposure to outdoor elements, including rain and sunlight, for an extended period.
