3 Benefits of Pop-Up Sprinklers

A Flat Garden Footprint
When you use a regular sprinkler head, you put it on top of the ground. So, for example, you might locate it in the middle of your lawn to water from a central point.
Regular sprinklers affect garden maintenance. When you're mowing your lawn, you have to mow around the sprinkler if it is fixed. Then, you have to find a way to cut the grass close to the head. This adds time to your work.

A Better Aesthetic
An above ground sprinkler is immediately visible. Plus, depending on how you set the sprinkler up, you may end up with pipes running across the lawn to feed the head. If you like your garden to look good, then you may find this detracts from your view.
This isn't a problem with pop-up sprinklers. They only come into sight when they work. The rest of the time you can't see them.

A Better Choice for Kids
If you have kids, then a regular sprinkler poses some problems. They may bang into the head, hurting themselves and possibly damaging the sprinkler. They may trip over pipes or cables.
Sprinklers are also a magnet for kids in the summer. If it's hot and they have friends round, they may be tempted to turn on the sprinkler to play water games and cool down. As well as wasting water, this may damage your garden. Too much watering or a dousing in the heat of the day isn't good for grass or plants.

Different Types of Pop-Up Sprinkler Heads

Fixed Spray Sprinkler Heads

Fixed sprinkler heads do exactly what you'd think—they spray a fixed pattern. Their nozzles produce a tight, constant fan of water. They don't rotate, so the water always sprays in the same direction. The water spray distance and radius can not be changed in most cases. For example, a common model sprays in a 45-degree pattern and throws water 10 feet.

Multiple Stream Sprinkler Heads

Another pop-up sprinkler is a multiple-stream head. This type produces multiple thin water streams distributed as the head rotates. Multiple-stream heads apply water more slowly and in a thin stream (versus the mist emitted by fixed spray heads), making them more water-efficient. Less water is lost to evaporation.

Gear-drive Rotor Sprinkler Heads

The third type of pop-up sprinkler is the gear-drive rotor. With this type, water enters from the bottom of the sprinkler and passes through a small turbine, which powers a set of gears that turn the sprinkler nozzle. Gear-drive heads move at a constant speed, distributing water evenly across the landscape.

Required Materials for Installing a Pop-Up Sprinkler System

Pop-up sprinklers with the right spray angle (e.g., 90°, 180°, or 360°)
Polyethylene pipes, also known as PE pipes. For underground use. Ensure the pipes can handle the pressure and are flexible enough to bend
Fittings (T-pieces, bends, end pieces) that match your pipe type/diameter
Tap or pump connection depending on your water source
Optionally, a filter if you draw water directly from a ditch or well
Teflon tape or sealing rings for waterproof connections
Digging tools (shovel or spade)
Measuring tape and marking tape for neat layout

FAQ

Q: Is it difficult to install a pop-up sprinkler yourself?

A: It's quite manageable. Most of the work involves digging trenches and neatly connecting the pipes. Work step by step and make sure you have the right materials and fittings on hand.

Q: What about maintenance costs?

A: The costs are generally manageable. Occasionally, you may need to replace a filter or sprinkler head that has become damaged or clogged. Most systems are quite robust, especially if you let the pipes drain in winter.

Q: Can I mix in nutrients, like fertilizers?

A: There are systems with special injector systems that mix nutrients into the pipe. For most gardens, separate fertilization (granules or liquid) on the lawn is still the standard.

Q: I want a neat garden. Will you see those pop-up sprinklers later?

A: After installation, you only see small round caps at ground level. They are hardly noticeable, especially if you install them flush and let the grass grow slightly over the edges.

Q: Why do pop-up sprinklers leak?

A: Low-head drainage is the most common reason for sprinkler head leaks. Faulty pipes are the most labor-intensive problem that causes sprinkler head leaks. Other causes of leaks include faulty sprinkler valves and broken sprinkler heads.

Q: How do you lubricate pop up sprinklers?

A: After thoroughly cleaning the parts, the dispenser body must be treated with WD-40 Specialist Silicone Lubricant and inserted and extracted several times to best distribute the lubricant evenly. This ensures that the pop-up can easily move when irrigation water is returned to the underground circuit.
