Garden Sprayer

A garden sprayer is used to apply liquid lawn treatment materials like fertilizer and insecticide, while a pressure washer is designed to use water at high pressure to clean various outdoor surfaces, such as patios. You cannot substitute one for the other.
The garden sprayer has a wide range of applications in gardening
Applying Pesticides:
Garden sprayers are commonly used to apply pesticides for controlling pests such as insects, mites, and diseases that can damage plants. Sprayers allow for precise and targeted application of pesticides, ensuring thorough coverage and effective pest control.
Herbicide Application:
Garden sprayers are used to apply herbicides for weed control. Whether you need to treat a small patch of weeds or a larger area, a sprayer can help you apply herbicides directly to the weeds, minimizing the impact on surrounding plants.
Fertilizer Application:
Sprayers are used to apply liquid fertilizers, including foliar fertilizers, to provide essential nutrients to plants. This method allows for efficient nutrient absorption through the leaves and can be particularly beneficial for plants with nutrient deficiencies or during periods of rapid growth.
Watering Plants:
Garden sprayers can be used to water plants, especially delicate or sensitive ones. By adjusting the nozzle or spray pattern, you can provide a gentle mist or a direct stream of water to plants, ensuring they receive the right amount of moisture.
Applying Foliar Feeds and Micronutrients:
Sprayers are used to apply foliar feeds and micronutrients to plants, providing them with additional nutrients and promoting healthy growth. This method is particularly useful when plants have nutrient deficiencies or when soil conditions limit nutrient uptake.
Types of Garden Sprayers
Hand Sprayers
Hand sprayers are compact, lightweight, and perfect for small garden plots or indoor plants. They are simple to use — just fill the reservoir, pump the handle to build pressure, and spray. If your gardening routine involves precision spraying on a few plants or spot-treatment of pests and weeds, hand sprayers are your go-to option.
Backpack Sprayers
Backpack sprayers, as the name suggests, can be comfortably strapped onto the user's back. They are designed for larger gardens and can hold a larger volume of liquid, usually a few gallons. This sprayer type allows more time for spraying and less for refilling, optimizing your garden maintenance routine.
12 Volt Battery Sprayers
For those who wish to completely eliminate manual pumping, 12-volt battery sprayers are a dream come true. They maintain consistent pressure, ensuring that the spray's strength doesn't diminish over time, which is often a problem with manual sprayers. If you have an extensive area to cover or if you spray regularly, a 12-volt battery sprayer would be a worthy investment.
Chemical Pumps
Chemical pumps, or chemical sprayers, are designed to spray out more corrosive substances like pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. They usually come with durable seals and gaskets to resist chemical damage. If your garden requires regular application of such substances, investing in a chemical pump is advisable.
Backpack Sprayer
The benefits of backpack sprayers
Easy to use
These sprayers have many features that make it easier to use, other than its backpack styled design. Various backpack models have a larger mouth opening allowing for easy filling. Most of these models will also have a very accessible on/off button and variable flow switches that are easy to reach while wearing the sprayer. As well as indicator lights that tell you when it’s time to charge the battery. Backpack sprayers are smaller than most sprayer models but have been designed in a way to make your work as simple as can be.
Better time efficiency
Backpack sprayers can easily cut your time in half compared to manual models. Most backpack sprayers will be able to spray a capacity of 750l in a single charge, that's essentially equivalent to 50 tank fulls with a manual sprayer. These figures will vary depending on the tank size of your backpack model, but you’ll be saving a whole heap of time if you're upgrading from a manual model.
Safety features
Newer backpack sprayer models are seeing an upgrade in safety features, which creates a great peace of mind for its users. Most of these models will have heavy-duty shoulder straps that are bolted or attached securely to the sprayer to prevent dropping or any other incidents. Most models will also come with a locking trigger to prevent accidental spraying while in use. It brings a sense of trust to its users, especially when you're spraying potentially harmful substances.
Battery life
Battery backpack sprayers can come with several different battery types, the most common are SLA and Lithium Ion. SLA batteries are generally cheaper but are much heavier. Lithium batteries on the other hand are a lot lighter, which means you won’t be carrying so much extra weight all the time. These lithium batteries also tend to outlast SLA’s by up to four times. The best batteries for these backpack sprayers are ones that have running times between three and eight hours. Some battery backpack sprayers also come with removable batteries, so you can charge the battery inside without having to bring the sprayer in.
Dosage according to the label when using a backpack sprayer
Example: You want to spray a part of the crop with a backpack sprayer. This is 150 x 3 meters. The surface area is 450 m². The label indicates 5 liters of agent per hectare with 200 liters of water.
So for this area, you need:
Water: (450:10,000) x 200 = 9 L
Agent: (450:10,000) x 5 = 0.225 L = 225 ml
The cap release is the amount of spray liquid the nozzle releases per minute at a certain pressure. You can find it in the article about spray nozzels | types and usage for horticulture.
The spray width is the number of centimeters of which the agent hits 100% of the sprayable surface. After all, more spray liquid ends up right below the nozzle than on the sides. That is why you must overlap, so that the same amount of spray liquid is dosed throughout. The entire width the nozzle covers is called the operating width.
The nozzle you use has a spray width of 1 m and an operating width of 50 cm. The first and last 50 cm require a half dosage.in total, you walk 3 times (namely at 50 cm, at 100 cm and at 150 cm). In total, you walk 300 m in 6 minutes. This means your walking speed is as follows:
300:6 = 50 m/minute
50 x 60 minutes = 3 km/hour
For a 100-meter distance, you walk 100:50 m/min = 2 minutes
It is important to constantly walk at the same speed and not stand still when spraying with a backpack sprayer. This way, the spray liquid is distributed evenly and you prevent overdosing.
Parts of Knapsack Sprayer and Their Functions

Tank: The tank is made of plastic material designed to house all the components of the backpack sprayer. The tank is made up of high-quality rubber that is resistant to rusting and corrosion. The tank is the major component of the sprayer and it is used for storing water or carrying mixed solution of herbicide, fungicide, and insecticide water for spraying. The tank is made of various capacities, but the most popular knapsack is the 16-liter sprayer due to its convenience and ease of carrying.
Filters: The backpack sprayer consists of two types of filters. The first filter is located close to the tank cover while the other is a long narrow filter located close to the trigger. These two filters are used to prevent dirt, or any other materials from blocking the nozzle.
Spraying Nozzles: The sprayer nozzle could be 30 o C, twin spray, fan spray, and four-hole spray nozzle. The nozzle consists of a plastic washer that prevents the water pressure from coming directly into the crops. This ensures that the water is released in the form of dew or mist which is very suitable for crops.
Pump: The pressure pump is one of the most important components of the knapsack sprayer. It acts as a hydraulic sprayer, equipped with special devices that help to gather pressure that can help covey or move water from one area to another. The backpack devices work by mechanical action that helps to discharge liquid line the capacity of the pumps. The capacity of the pump is directly proportional to the speed. The pump is protected by a pressure relief valve that helps to protect the pump from damage.
Pressure regulator: The pressure regulator is located close to the pump and is used for adjusting the pressure of the knapsacks when spraying. The pressure regulator is responsible for maintaining the required pressure for any spraying job within the pressure range of the pump. It is a safety device that redirects the excess pressure from the pump back to the tank.
Valves: These consist of the cut-off valve and bypass valves. It is used to regulate the flow of liquid or gas from the pump and flow from the pump to the tank.
Air chamber: An air chamber is a portion where the air temporarily stored provides a constant nozzle pressure for the pump.
Agitator: This device is used to stir the solution in the tank and keep the contents thoroughly mixed. The agitator helps to mix various types of materials in the tank such as powdery, fungicides, water paints, or other spray materials, and allows a thorough mixture of substances.
Pump handle: This is also called the Lever’s arm, It is a long L-shaped fixed with the pump cylinder which is pulled up and down to increase the pressure of the knapsack.
Strap buckles: This is where the knapsack belt is fixed which enables the knapsack to be carried from one place to another.
Hose: The hose is a long, hollow tube that is used to carry the solution from the tank to the nozzle for spraying.
Trigger: This is used to release the solution from the tanks to the nozzle to commence spraying. Whenever the trigger is pressed down the desired flow rate is achieved. The trigger contains a small button that is used to lock or open when necessary.
